Savant, one of the UK’s leading suppliers of IT systems to the healthcare sector is driving the implementation of RFID in the Blood Transfusion Service by holding a conference at the RFID Centre in Bracknell on 12th March, 2008.
The conference plans to demonstrate that RFID is now sufficiently established to be ready for a proof of concept trial across the lifecycle of a bloodbag. Trials in the US and Germany have already shown the technology to be sound and will be fully presented at the session.
The day will begin with live demonstrations, including RFID / wireless products and applications already being used in the healthcare sector. Leading figures from around the world will then begin to explore the case for RFID, bringing their own experience to the debate and identifying areas where RFID could make a real difference.
They include Professor Jonathan Kay from Oxford Radcliffe Hospital, Professor Mike Murphy from the National Blood Service and Dr Ralf Knels from DRK Dresden. Rodeina Davies, Vice President & CIO from Wisconsin Blood Centre will help us to explore the return on investment, showing that there is a case for RFID not only in terms of patient safety, but also in cost savings. There will also be presentations on the trial starting at the MayDay Trust in the UK and MacoPharma who have a commercial RFID system.
By the time the day comes to a close, it is hoped that a consensus will have been formed that a proof of concept trial across the whole lifecycle of a blood bag would be a good next step.
